Prisons, Poverty & The Chruch

From the mid-1970’s to today, the number of people incarcerated in the U.S. has quadrupled, from roughly 500,000 to 2.3 million, largely due to the “war on drugs.”

The Department of Justice estimates that states and the federal government combined spent $80 billion on corrections in 2010. One in every three black males born today can expect to do prison time at some point in their lives. Compared to 1 in every 6 Latino males, and 1 in every 17 white males.
